A traditional red brick courthouse built in 1898 sits at Court Street and Main Street. United States Highway 20 Alternate is four blocks south of the courthouse. The building has been enlarged in 1957 and a County Administration Building was added in 1992. The county was created from Genesee and Ontario counties on February 23, 1821 as the 52nd county with Geneseo as the only county seat. Claude F. Bradon and J. C. Hillman are the Georgian and Classical Revival building designers. Livingston County was named for a signer of the Declaration of Independence Robert R. Livingston. The county seat name is Native American for “beautiful valley.” It is the same source as Genesee County.
Livingston County government consists of an administrator, a sheriff, a comptroller, an attorney, an assessor, and a clerk (executive). It has 20 Legislators (legislative.) One County Court Judge and One Family Court Judge serve Livingston County (judicial.) Livingston County is in western New York. Buffalo, New York is west and Albany, New York is east of the county. The county center is 2.9 miles South-Southeast of Geneseo. The county is surrounded clockwise by Monroe, Ontario, Steuben, Allegany, Wyoming, and Genesee counties.

It has a density of 96.6 persons per square mile making it 32 out of 62 in the state. Livingston County has 41.6% of its population in its incorporated areas. Interstate Highway 390 crosses north to south in the county from Monroe County to Steuben County. United States Highway 20 goes east to west from Ontario County to Genesee County. United States Highway 20 Alternate travels from Ontario County, east, to Wyoming County, southwest. The county is shaped like a man on his head. Geneseo is located west of center in the county. Geneseo is the county seat and the largest city. It is 12.3% of the county population. The county seat is pronounced GE-NEE-SEE-OE. This county is in the Rochester Metropolitan Statistical Area.
