The Modern red brick Justice Center was constructed in 2004 at the corner of Main and 5th Streets.  Its site is north of Currituck off Caratoke Highway at Courthouse Road.  Caratoke Highway is North Carolina State Highway 168.  The architects are Cederquist, Rodriguez, Ripley and Maddox.  The 1842 courthouse is still used in Currituck, the only county seat.  The courthouse has been remodeled in 1897 and 1952 and enlarged in 1999.  Currituck County was established on January 1, 1668 from Albemarle County, which no longer exists and is considered an original county (2nd county.)  The county and county seat are named for the Native American word for “wild geese.”  Currituck County was the birthplace for 1 North Carolina Governor, Thomas J. Jarvis. 

Currituck County government consists of a manager, a register, a sheriff, an attorney, and a clerk (executive).  It has 7 Commissioners (legislative.)  Sixteen Superior Court Judges serve Currituck, Beaufort, Bertie, Camden, Chowan, Dare, Durham, Edgecombe, Franklin, Gates, Granville, Halifax, Hertford, Hyde, Martin, Nash, Northampton, Pasquotank, Perquimans, Person, Pitts, Tyrrell, Vance, Warren, Washington, and Wilson counties, One District Court Judge serves Currituck, Camden, Chowan, Dare, Gates, Pasquotank, and Perquimans counties and a court clerk serve Currituck County (judicial.)  Currituck County is in the northeast corner of North Carolina on the border with Virginia.  Norfolk, Virginia is north and Raleigh, North Carolina is southwest of the county.  The county center is 4 miles Southwest of Currituck nearer Barco.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Virginia and the Atlantic Ocean and Dare and Camden counties. 

The area of the county is 526 square miles.  It is 43 out of 100 in the state.  It ranks 72 out of 100 in population in the state.  It has a density of 53.4 persons per square mile making it 75 out of 100 in the state.  Currituck County has 0.0% of its population in its incorporated areas since there are no incorporated cities.  United States Highway 158 crosses the county from west to south from Camden County to Dare County.  The county is a skinny funnel bending southeast.  The Town of Currituck is located on the northeast coast of the county.  Currituck is the county seat and the largest populated area.  It is 2.6% of the county population.  The county and county seat are pronounced KUR-I-TUK.  This county is in the Virginia Beach-Norfolk-Newport News Metropolitan Statistical Area.
