The 1938 red brick Classical Revival building is on Main Street between 2nd and 3rd streets. Main Street is North Carolina State Highway 55. Raymond Fuson provided the building designs. An Annex was added in 1976. The courthouse features columns and veteran memorials on the grounds. There was an 1893 courthouse previously also in Bayboro the only county seat. The county was taken from parts of Beaufort and Craven counties on January 30, 1872 as the 94rh county. The county is named for the Pamlico Sound. Bayboro is named for the Bay River. The county resembles a fat check mark. Bayboro is located in the northwest quarter of the county. Bayboro is the county seat and the largest city. It is 9.6% of the county population.

Fourteen Superior Court Judges serve Pamlico, Bladen, Brunswick, Carteret, Columbus, Craven, Duplin, Greene, Jones, Lenoir, New Hanover, Onslow, Pender, Robeson, Sampson, and Wayne counties, One District Court Judge serves Pamlico, Carteret, and Craven counties and a court clerk serves Pamlico County (judicial.) Pamlico County is on the eastern coast of North Carolina. Raleigh, North Carolina is west and Fayetteville, North Carolina is southwest of the county. The county center is 7.3 miles East of Bayboro nearer Florence. The county is surrounded clockwise by Beaufort, Hyde, Carteret, and Craven counties.

It has a density of 21.8 persons per square mile making it 97 out of 100 in the state. Pamlico County has 40.8% of its population in its incorporated areas. There are no Interstates or United States Highways in the county. Bayboro is the county seat and the largest city. It is 9.5% of the county population. The county is pronounced PAM-LEE-KOE. This county is in the New Bern Micropolitan Statistical Area.
