The Modern Greek Revival 1908 stone and concrete courthouse was completely remodeled 1974 to give the current appearance. It was enlarged in 2005. The courthouse is at 4th, Chestnut, 5th, and Elm streets. North Carolina State Highway 41 is three blocks south of the facility. Frank Pierce Milburn provided the original designs. The building features columns and an Arrowhead and veteran memorials sit on the grounds. There has been an 1848 courthouse too in Lumberton the only county seat. The county was created from Bladen County on January 1, 1787 as the 51st county. It is named for Revolutionary War hero Colonel Thomas Robeson. Lumberton is named for the Lumber River. Robeson County was the birthplace for 1 North Carolina Governor, Angus W. McLean.

Fourteen Superior Court Judges serve Robeson, Bladen, Brunswick, Carteret, Columbus, Craven, Duplin, Greene, Jones, Lenoir, New Hanover, Onslow, Pamlico, Pender, Sampson, and Wayne counties and Ten District Court Judges and a court clerk serve Robeson County (judicial.) Robeson County is on the southeast border with South Carolina. Fayetteville, North Carolina is north and Charlotte, North Carolina is northwest of the county. The center of the county is 6.6 miles West of Lumberton nearer Pembroke. The county is surrounded clockwise by Cumberland, Bladen, and Columbus counties and South Carolina and Scotland and Hoke counties.
The area of the county is 949 square miles. It is 7 out of 100 in the state. It ranks 25 out of 100 in population in the state. It has a density of 122.8 persons per square mile making it 46 out of 100 in the state. Robeson County has 28.6% of its population in its incorporated areas. Interstate Highway 95 travels through the county from northeast to southwest from Cumberland County to South Carolina. United States Highway 74 goes from southeast, Columbus County, to northwest, Scotland County. United States Highway 301 parallels Interstate Highway 95 from Cumberland County to South Carolina. United States Highway 501 enters from Scotland County, northwest, and exits into South Carolina, southwest. Robeson County looks like a bird’s head facing northwest. Lumberton is located in the eastern third of the county. Lumberton is the county seat and the largest city. It is 16.3% of the county population. The county is pronounced ROEB-SON. This county is in the Lumberton Micropolitan Statistical Area.
