Greer County (5,492), Mangum (2,765)

The governmental appearance to the 1907 Classical Revival courthouse is blended in the large trees on the city square.  It was remodeled in 1934.  It is one block west of United States Highway 283 at the corner of Oklahoma and Court streets.  The dark red brick and masonry designs were provided by Solomon Andrew Layton.  An Annex has been added.  Waterfalls are on the corners of the grounds.  The county was formed on May 4, 1896 as the 21st county but later subdivided into Greer, Beckham, and Jackson counties.  In 1907 Greer County was once again divided into Greer and Harmon counties.  This is the only courthouse for Greer County thus Mangum is the only county seat.  Greer County is named for Texas Lieutenant Governor, John A. Greer.  Landowner, A. S. Magnum is the source for the county seat name.

Greer County government consists of a treasurer, a sheriff, an assessor, and a clerk (executive).  It has 3 Commissioners (legislative.)  Seven District Court Judges serve Greer, Harmon, Jackson, Kiowa and Tillman counties and a court clerk serves Greer County (judicial.)  The county is located in the far southwest corner of the state.  Oklahoma City, Oklahoma is northeast and Wichita Falls, Texas, is southeast of the county.  The North Fork of the Red River forms its entire eastern border.  The county center is 8.9 miles Northwest of Mangum nearer Granite.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Beckham, Kiowa, Jackson, and Harmon counties.

The area of the county is 639 square miles.  It is 58 out of 77 in the state.  It ranks 67 out of 77 in population in the state.  It has a density of 8.6 persons per square mile making it 62 out of 77 in the state.  Greer County has 82.1% of its population in its incorporated areas.  United States Highway 283 crosses north to south from Beckham County to Jackson County.  The county is overall rectangular but there are four “steps” on the west border and two on the south.  Mangum is in the southeast quarter of the county.  Mangum is the county seat and the largest city.  It is 50.4% of the county population.
