The red brick Romanesque courthouse was built in 1890 and enlarged in 2000. The courthouse is at 5th and Broad streets. Pennsylvania State Highway 120 is located one block south of the site. A. B. Wagner provided the designs. Cameron County was established on March 29, 1860 from parts of McKean, Potter, Elk, and Clinton counties as the 66th county. Emporium has always been the county seat. The county is named for United States Senator Simon Cameron. The county seat is presumably a descriptive word for the commercial importance of the town.

The county is surrounded clockwise by Potter, Clinton, Clearfield, Elk, and McKean counties.
