The red brick, columned Greek Revival structure was constructed in 1854.  It is located on Maple Street at Public Avenue.  Pennsylvania State Highway 29 is Public Avenue.  W. H. Boyd provided the building designs.  The courthouse was enlarged in 1883.  The county was founded on February 21, 1810 from Luzerne County as the 44th county with Montrose as the only county seat.  The county is named for the Susquehanna River.  Montrose is a combination of the French for “mountain” and for settler L. R. Rose. 

Susquehanna County government consists of a sheriff and 3 Commissioners.  One Common Pleas Court Judge and Three Magistrate Court Judges serve Susquehanna County.  Susquehanna County is located on the northeast border with New York.  Harrisburg, Pennsylvania is southwest and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania is southeast of the county.  The county center is 8.2 miles Southeast of Montrose nearer Brooklyn.  The county is surrounded clockwise by New York and Wayne, Lackawanna, Wyoming, and Bradford counties. 

The area of the county is 832 square miles.  It is 22 out of 67 in the state.  It ranks 55 out of 67 in population in the state.  It has a density of 46.2 persons per square mile making it 57 out of 67 in the state.  Susquehanna County has 24.1% of its population in its incorporated areas.  Interstate Highway 81 passes through the county from north to south from New York to Lackawanna County.  United States Highway 11 parallels Interstate Highway 81 from New York to Lackawanna County.  Susquehanna County is an overall rectangle.  Montrose is in the western third of the county.  Forest City is located in the southeast corner of the county.  Montrose is the county seat and Forest City is the largest city.  Montrose is 3.4% of the county population while Forest City is 4.6% of the county population.
