The tan/red brick Beaux Arts courthouse was erected in 1900 and enlarged in 1959.  It is located on Market Street between George and Duke streets.  Market Street is Pennsylvania State Highway 74 in this part of town.  John Augustine Dempwolf is the building designer.  There were 1754 and 1838 courthouses in York previously as York has been the only county seat.  A 2004 Justice Center has been added to augment the courthouse.  York County was founded on August 19, 1749 from Lancaster County as the 5th county.  The county and its county seat are named for the Duke of York.  York County is the birthplace of 2 Pennsylvania governors, George M. Leader and Thomas W. Wolf. 

York County government consists of a sheriff and 3 Commissioners.  Thirteen Common Pleas Court Judges and Twenty-one Magistrate Court Judges serve York County.  York County is in the southern part of Pennsylvania on the border with Maryland.  Harrisburg, Pennsylvania is north and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania is northeast of the county.  The Susquehanna River forms its eastern border.  The county center is in York 1 mile South-Southwest of the city center.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Dauphin and Lancaster counties and Maryland and Adams and Cumberland counties. 

The area of the county is 910 square miles.  It is 13 out of 67 in the state.  It ranks 8 out of 67 in population in the state.  It has a density of 501.6 persons per square mile making it 11 out of 67 in the state.  York County has 26.0% of its population in its incorporated areas.  Interstate Highway 83 travels through the county from north to south from Cumberland County to Maryland.  United States Highway 15 clips the northwest from Cumberland County, northwest, to Adams County, west.  United States Highway 30 enters from Lancaster County, east, and exits into Adams County, west.  The county shape looks like a bag of garbage with the top leaning west.  The City of York is located in the center of the county.  York is the county seat and the largest city.  It is 9.8% of the county population.  This county is in the York-Hanover Metropolitan Statistical Area.
