The tan brick Classical Revival courthouse was built in 1931. It is located on Main Street at 2nd Street. The courthouse is five blocks south of United States Highway 212 in the town. Hugill and Blatherwick are the architects. The was a wooden 1911 courthouse earlier. The county was established on February 1, 1911 as the 64th county with Dupree as the only county seat. Ziebach County is named for Frank M. Ziebach, state legislator. Dupree is named for settler Fred Dupris.
Ziebach County government consists of a sheriff and 5 Commissioners. Four Circuit Court Judges and One Magistrate Court Judge serve Ziebach, Butte, Corson, Dewey, Harding, Lawrence, Meade, and Perkins counties. Ziebach County is in northern South Dakota. Pierre, South Dakota is southeast and Rapid City, South Dakota is southwest of the county. The county center is 17.8 miles South-Southwest of Dupree. The county is surrounded clockwise by Corson, Dewey, Stanley, Haakon, Pennington, Meade, and Perkins counties.
The area of the county is 1962 square miles. It is 9 out of 66 in the state. It ranks 53 out of 66 in population in the state. It has a density of 1.2 persons per square mile making it 62 out of 66 in the state. Ziebach County has 46.3% of its population in its incorporated areas. United States Highway 212 goes east to west in the county from Dewey County to Meade County. The county is shaped like a capital letter L. Dupree is located near the eastern border of the county. Eagle Butte is in the southeast quarter of the county and extends into Dewey County. Dupree is the county seat and Eagle Butte is the largest city. Dupree is 20.5% of the county population while Eagle Butte is 28.5% of the county population.
