Another Modern structure, the tan brick courthouse was built in 1884 and located on the town square.  William W. Dudly designed the courthouse.  A major remodeling designed by Wyatt Hedrick in 1952 transformed the stone courthouse into its current brick appearance.  Texas State Highways 153 and 206 intersect at the courthouse.  United States Highways 84 and 283 bypass the courthouse area to the west.  It is the only courthouse the county has had since it was organized on January 22, 1858 although Camp Colorado was the first county seat.  The county was originally part of Brown and Travis counties as the 125th county.  Coleman County and city were named for Texas Revolutionary and signer of the Texas Declaration of Independence, Robert Morris Coleman. 

Coleman County government consists of a sheriff, a County Judge, and 4 Commissioners.  One District Court Judge serves Coleman, Callahan, and Taylor counties and One County Court Judge serves Coleman County.  The Colorado River is the southern border of this county located southeast of Abilene, Texas.  The county center is 7.3 miles South of Coleman.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Callahan, Brown, McCulloch, Concho, Runnels, and Taylor counties. 

The area of the county is 1273 square miles.  It is 34 out of 254 in the state.  It ranks 180 out of 254 in population in the state.  It has a density of 6.0 persons per square mile making it 188 out of 254 in the state.  Coleman County has 65.6% of its population in its incorporated areas.  United States Highway 67 crosses east to west, Brown County to Runnels County.  United States Highway 84 comes in at the top northwest corner from Taylor County and goes out to the east into Brown County.  United States Highway 283 goes north to south from Callahan County into McCulloch County.  The county is a tall rectangle with the wavy south border of the river.  Coleman is near the county’s center.  Coleman is the county seat and the largest city.  It is 50.9% of the county population.
