Henry T. Phelps designed the Modern appearance for the pink brick and stone courthouse. It was built in 1929 at Main (United States Highways 83/377) and College streets. The building was remodeled and enlarged in 1974. Veteran memorials are on the grounds. All three courthouses for the county have been in Kimbleville and Junction since the January 22, 1858 organization. The county was taken from Bexar County as the 135th county. Kimble County got its name from George C. Kimbell who died at the Alamo. The spelling of his name is unclear but the legislation establishing Kimble County spelled it this way. Junction is named for the junction of the north and south forks of the Llano River which combine at the city.
Kimble County government consists of a sheriff, a County Judge, and 4 Commissioners. One District Court Judge serves Kimble, McCulloch, Mason, and Menard counties and One County Court Judge serves Kimble County. The county is situated in the hill country west of Austin, Texas, northwest of San Antonio, Texas, and southeast of San Angelo, Texas. The county center is 3.8 miles Northeast of Junction. The county is surrounded clockwise by Menard, Mason, Gillespie, Kerr, Edwards, Sutton, and Schleicher counties.
The area of the county is 1251 square miles. It is 35 out of 254 in the state. It ranks 207 out of 254 in population in the state. It has a density of 3.4 persons per square mile making it 213 out of 254 in the state. Kimble County has 57.1% of its population in its incorporated areas. Interstate Highway 10 enters from the southeast, Kerr County, and exits to the west, Sutton County. United States Highway 83 crosses north to south from Menard County to Kerr County. United States Highway 290 comes in from Gillespie County, east, and terminates in Kimble County. United States Highway 377 diagonals from northeast to southwest, Menard County to Edwards County. The county is a rectangle with its northeast corner missing. Junction is near the county center. Junction is the county seat and the largest city since it is the only incorporated city. It is 57.1% of the county population.
