A Modern Mediterranean courthouse was built in 1979 to replace the historic 1885 structure. It is located on 500 Quarry Street at Madison Street. Barton D. Riley and Associates are the architects. Two courthouses have been in Maverick County since its formation on January 1, 1856, both in Eagle Pass. The county was originally part of Kinney County and the 112th county. The county was named for Sam Maverick, Texas independence fighter, legislator, and signer of the Texas Declaration of Independence. Eagle Pass is named for Camp Eagle Pass whose name came from the flight of eagles going back and forth from their nests.
Maverick County government consists of a sheriff, a County Judge, and 4 Commissioners. Two District Court Judges serve Maverick, Dimmit, and Zavala counties and One County Court Judge serves Maverick County. The county is far southwest part of the state with the Rio Grande forming the entire western border with Mexico. San Antonio, Texas is northeast and Laredo, Texas is southeast of the county. The county center is 13.6 miles East of Eagle Pass. The county is surrounded clockwise by Kinney, Uvalde, Zavala, Dimmit, and Webb counties and Mexico.
The area of the county is 1280 square miles. It is 33 out of 254 in the state. It ranks 59 out of 254 in population in the state. It has a density of 45.2 persons per square mile making it 85 out of 254 in the state. Maverick County has 45.4% of its population in its incorporated areas. United States Highway 57 enters from Zavala County on the east and terminates in the county. United States Highway 277 comes from the north, Kinney County, and exits to the southeast, Dimmit County. The county is an upside-down fat L shape. Eagle Pass is on the Rio Grande near the halfway point north and south in the county. Eagle Pass is the county seat and the largest city since it is the only incorporated city. It is 45.4% of the county population. This county is in the Eagle Pass Micropolitan Statistical Area.
