The columned Colonial facility was erected in 1923. The courthouse is sited on Virginia Street between Court and Church streets. United States Highway 360 Business passes two blocks to the northwest. Cooper Lai is the red brick structure architect. The building has been enlarged. The courthouse sits in a park setting with veteran memorials on the grounds. There was an 1850 courthouse before. Amelia County and its county seat are named for Princess Amelia Sophia, daughter of King George II. Amelia County is the birthplace to 1 Virginia Governor, William B. Giles.

The county is situated in southern Virginia. Richmond, Virginia is northeast and Roanoke, Virginia is west of the county. The county center is 1.5 miles Southeast of Amelia Court House. The county is surrounded clockwise by Powhatan, Chesterfield, Dinwiddie, Nottoway, Prince Edward, and Cumberland counties.
