The 1826 Greek Revival courthouse was remodeled in 1966.  It is on River Road at Courthouse Way.  River Road is United States Highway 522 in the town.  Dabney Cosby is the architect of the red brick facility.  The building was enlarged in 1955 and 1990.  A former high school was remodeled in 2005 to serve as the county Administration Building.  Many supporting buildings are in the complex.  Many of the Virginia counties have their county seat at a location named after the county followed by the words Court House.  Some counties maintain this in their official name.  The county was established on January 1, 1728 from Henrico County as the 26th county and Goochland has always been the county seat.  The county and county seat were named for British Lieutenant Governor William Gooch.  Goochland County is the birthplace to 1 Virginia Governor, Thomas M. Randolph, Jr. 

Goochland County government consists of a sheriff and 5 Supervisors.  Three Circuit Court Judges and Nine District Court Judges serve Goochland, Albemarle, Culpeper, Fluvanna, Greene, Louisa, Madison, and Orange counties and Charlottesville City and Forty-two Magistrate Court Judges serve Goochland, Albemarle, Clarke, Culpeper, Fauquier, Fluvanna, Frederick, Greene, Loudoun, Louisa, Madison, Orange, Page, Rappahannock, Rockingham, Shenandoah, and Warren counties and Charlottesville, Harrisonburg, and Winchester cities.  The county is in the center of the state.  Richmond, Virginia is southeast and Roanoke, Virginia is southwest of the county.  The county center is 4.4 miles Northwest of Goochland nearer Sandy Hook.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Louisa, Hanover, Henrico, Powhatan, Cumberland, and Fluvanna counties. 

The area of the county is 284 square miles.  It is 71 out of 133 in the state.  It ranks 70 out of 133 in population in the state.  It has a density of 87.1 persons per square mile making it 74 out of 133 in the state.  Goochland County has 0.0% of its population in its incorporated areas since there aren’t any incorporated cities.  Interstate Highway 64 enters the county from the east, Henrico County, and exits to the west, Fluvanna County.  United States Highway 250 parallels Interstate Highway 64 from Henrico to Fluvanna counties.  United States Highway 522 crosses north to south from Louisa County to Powhatan County.  The county looks like the number 7 lying almost on its face.  The City of Goochland is located near the center of the county.  Goochland is the county seat and the largest populated area.  It is 3.5% of the county population.  The county and county seat are pronounced GOOCH-LAND.  This county is in the Richmond Metropolitan Statistical Area.
