The Modern concrete and steel building was built in 1967 to replace the 1910 courthouse.  The courthouse is on Rockefeller Avenue at Wall Street.  United States Highway 2 is located one block to the north.  Harmon-Pray-Detrich provided the building designs.  Veteran memorials are on the grounds.  There are augmenting Courthouses in Arlington, Monroe, and Lynnwood.  There was also an 1898 courthouse previously.  Snohomish County was founded on January 14, 1861 from Island County as the 19th county.  It is named for the Native American tribe.  The county seat was named for the son of founder Charles Colby.  Mukilteo (1861), Snohomish (1861), and Everett (1897) have all served as the county seat. 

Snohomish County government consists of a sheriff, an Executive, and 5 Commissioners.  Fifteen Superior Court Judges and Eight District Court Judges serve Snohomish County.  The county is in the western part of the state.  Seattle, Washington is south and Vancouver, Canada is northwest of the county.  The county center is 26.2 miles East-Northeast of Everett nearer Granite Falls.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Skagit, Chelan, King, Kitsap, and Island counties. 

The area of the county is 2196 square miles.  It is 14 out of 39 in the state.  It ranks 3 out of 39 in population in the state.  It has a density of 324.83 persons per square mile making it 6 out of 39 in the state.  Snohomish County has 57.6% of its population in its incorporated areas.  Interstate Highway 5 crosses north to south in the county from Skagit County to King County.  United States Highway 2 enters the county from the southeast, King County, and terminates.  The county looks like an anvil.  Everett is located on the western border of the county.  Everett is the county seat and the largest city.  It is 14.4% of the county population.  The county is pronounced SNO-HOE-MISH.  This county is in the Seattle-Tacoma-Bellevue Metropolitan Statistical Area.
