The Modern red/brown brick and concrete structure was constructed in 1976.  It replaced 1879 and 1909 versions of the courthouse.  The courthouse is at the intersection of Highland Avenue and Grove Street.  West Virginia State Highway 28 passes two blocks to the west.  Herbert T. Stratton is the building designer.  The facility features a metal roof and veteran memorials on the grounds.  Grant County was formed on February 14, 1866 from Hardy County as the 52nd county with Petersburg as the only county seat.  It is named for General Ulysses S. Grant.  He is also the namesake for the county seat of Calhoun County.  The county seat was named for founder Jacob Peterson. 

Grant County government consists of a sheriff and 3 Commissioners.  Two Circuit Court Judges serve Grant, Mineral, and Tucker counties and One Family Court Judge and Two Magistrate Court Judges serve Grant, Hardy, and Pendleton counties.  The county is in the northeast part of West Virginia.  Charleston, West Virginia is southwest and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania is northwest of the county.  The county center is 11.6 miles North of Petersburg nearer Maysville. 

The county is surrounded clockwise by Mineral, Hampshire, Hardy, Pendleton, Tucker, and Preston counties and Maryland.  The county is shaped like a fat number 7.  Petersburg is located in the southeast quarter of the county.  Petersburg is the county seat and the largest city.  It is 20.8% of the county population.  The area of the county is 477 square miles.  It is 19 out of 55 in the state.  It ranks 43 out of 55 in population in the state.  It has a density of 23.0 persons per square mile making it 47 out of 55 in the state.  Grant County has 22.6% of its population in its incorporated areas.  United States Highway 50 clips the northwest corner from Mineral County, northeast, to Tucker County, northwest.  United States Highway 220 comes from Hardy County, east, and goes to Pendleton County, southwest.
