The masonry Modern building was erected in 1932.  It sits at the intersection of Main and Court streets.  West Virginia State Highway 20 is Main Street in the town.  R. L. Walker and H. F. Horne and Carlton C. Wood combined on the designs.  There was a traditional 1889 version before in Clarksburg, the only county seat.  The county was formed on May 3, 1784 from Monongalia County as the 6th county.  The county is named for Benjamin Harrison of Virginia, father of future United States President William Henry Harrison.  Clarksburg was named for American Revolutionary War hero George Rogers Clark.  Harrison County is the birthplace of 1 West Virginia Governor, Howard M. Gore. 

Harrison County government consists of a sheriff and 3 Commissioners.  Three Circuit Court Judges serve Harrison County and Two Family Court Judges and Six Magistrate Court Judges serve Harrison and Doddridge counties.  Harrison County is in northern West Virginia.  Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania is north and Charleston, West Virginia is southwest of the county.  The county center is 3.9 miles North of Clarksburg nearer Dawmont.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Marion, Taylor, Barbour, Upshur, Lewis, Doddridge, and Wetzel counties. 

The area of the county is 416 square miles.  It is 29 out of 55 in the state.  It ranks 7 out of 55 in population in the state.  It has a density of 158.5 persons per square mile making it 12 out of 55 in the state.  Harrison County has 52.4% of its population in its incorporated areas.  Interstate Highway 79 passes northeast to southwest in the county from Marion County to Lewis County.  United States Highway 19 enters from Marion County and joins Interstate Highway 79 into Lewis County.  United States Highway 50 crosses east to west form Taylor County to Doddridge County.  The county is an overall rectangle with a nose sticking out of both sides.  Clarksburg is located slightly east of center in the county.  Clarksburg is the county seat and the largest city.  It is 24.4% of the county population.  This county is in the Clarksburg Micropolitan Statistical Area.
