The Greek Revival style building was completed in 1878 and remodeled and enlarged in 1974.  The courthouse is on 7th Avenue at Court Street.  West Virginia State Highway 2 is one block to the west of the site.  Charles C. Kemble is the red brick building designer.  The courthouse features columns and a tower.  Veteran memorials and a canon are on the grounds.  A supporting court facility was added in 1999.  The county was created on March 12, 1835 from Ohio County as the 26th county.  Elizabethtown was the first county seat until 1865 when Moundsville became the county seat.  Marshall County is named for United States Supreme Court Chief Justice John Marshall.  The county seat was named for local Native American mounds.  Marshall County is the birthplace of 1 West Virginia Governor, Arch A. Moore, Jr. 

Marshall County government consists of a sheriff and 3 Commissioners.  Two Circuit Court Judges, One Family Court Judge and Three Magistrate Court Judges serve Marshall, Tyler, and Wetzel counties.  The county is located in the northern panhandle of the state.  Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania is northeast and Charleston, West Virginia is south of the county.  The county center is 4.2 miles Southeast of Moundsville.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Ohio County and Pennsylvania and Wetzel County and Ohio.  The county is shaped like a laboratory flask. 

The area of the county is 307 square miles.  It is 44 out of 55 in the state.  It ranks 18 out of 55 in population in the state.  It has a density of 99.6 persons per square mile making it 15 out of 55 in the state.  Marshall County has 44.9% of its population in its incorporated areas.  United States Highway 250 enters the county from the north, Ohio County, and exits to the south, Wetzel County.  Moundsville is located on the northwest border of the county.  Moundsville is the county seat and the largest city.  It is 26.4% of the county population.  This county is in the Wheeling Metropolitan Statistical Area.
