The tan brick Romanesque Revival courthouse was built in 1889. The facility is located on Lake Avenue at Cyclops Street. United States Highway 2 passes one block north of the location. James E. Clancy provided the designs. The red roof stands out in the community. The building was enlarged in 1994. Florence County was founded on January 1, 1882 from parts of Marinette and Oconto counties as the 64th county with Florence as the only county seat. The county and its county seat are named for settler Florence Terry Hulst.
