The Modern dark red/brown brick and stone facility replaced a classic 1893 version. It is on Taconite Street south of Villa Drive. United States Highway 51 is in front of the courthouse. Nelson & Jorgensen are the architects. The building was built in 1975 and enlarged in 2002. A helicopter, tank, and veteran memorials are on the grounds. The county was formed on January 1, 1893 from parts of Ashland and Oneida counties as the 69th county and Hurley has always been the county seat. Iron County is named for local mineral deposits. The county seat was named for Judge M. A. Hurley.
Iron County government consists of a sheriff and 15 Supervisors. One Circuit Court Judge serves Iron County. Iron County is situated on the northern border with Michigan. Lake Superior is its northwest border. Green Bay, Wisconsin is southeast and Minneapolis, Minnesota is southwest of the county. The county center is 13.3 miles South of Hurley nearer Pine Lake. The county is surrounded clockwise by Michigan and Vilas, Price, and Ashland counties and Minnesota.

It has a density of 8.1 persons per square mile making it 72 out of 72 in the state. Iron County has 38.5% of its population in its incorporated areas. United States Highway 2 crosses the county from east to west from Michigan to Ashland County. United States Highway 51 originates and heads southeast into Vilas County. The county resembles a pistol pointing south. Hurley is located on the northern border of the county. Hurley is the county seat and the largest city. It is 25.5% of the county population. The county seat is pronounced HER-LEE.
