The stone Neo-Classical structure was built in 1939.  The facility is on State, Oak, La Crosse, and Hickory streets.  United States Highway 12 is State Street.  Donn Hougen designed the facility.  It features veteran memorials on the grounds.  A Justice Center was added in 2001.  There was an 1874 courthouse previously.  The county was founded on January 1, 1857 from Adams County as the 54th county.  New Lisbon was the first county seat until 1864 when Juneau became the county seat.  Juneau is named for trader Solomon Juneau.  The county seat was named for settler M. M. Maughs.  Juneau County is the birthplace of 1 Wisconsin Governor, Tommy G. Thompson. 

Juneau County government consists of a sheriff and 21 Supervisors.  Two Circuit Court Judges and One Municipal Court Judge serve Juneau County.  Juneau County is located in the southwest part of the state.  Madison, Wisconsin is southeast and Green Bay, Wisconsin is northeast of the county.  The Wisconsin River forms its eastern border.  The county center is 6.8 miles North of Mauston nearer New Lisbon.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Wood, Adams, Columbia, Sauk, Vernon, Monroe, and Jackson counties. 

The area of the county is 766.9 square miles.  It is 33 out of 72 in the state.  It ranks 46 out of 72 in population in the state.  It has a density of 34.8 persons per square mile making it 44 out of 72 in the state.  Juneau County has 40.0% of its population in its incorporated areas.  Interstate Highways 90/94 enter the county from the west, Monroe County, and exit to the southeast, Sauk County.  United States Highway 12 parallels Interstate Highway 90 from Monroe to Sauk counties.  The county looks like a chess piece.  Mauston is located in the southern quarter of the county.  Mauston is the county seat and the largest city.  It is 16.3% of the county population.  The county seat is pronounced MA-STON.
