The red masonry and stone Classical Revival courthouse was erected in 1905. It is located at the intersection of Clermont Street, 3rd Avenue, Edison Street, and 2nd Avenue. The facility is one block west of United States Highway 45. Frank W. Kinney and Meno S. Detweiler are the designers. The facility features a tower and veteran memorials on the grounds. An Administration Building supports the courthouse. Langlade County was established on March 3, 1879 as the 61st county with Antigo as the only county seat. The county is named for fur trader Charles Miguel de Langlade. The county seat is Native American for “evergreen.”
Langlade County government consists of a sheriff and 21 Supervisors. One Circuit Court Judge serves Langlade County. The county is in the northeast part of Wisconsin. Green Bay, Wisconsin is southeast and Madison, Wisconsin is south of the county. The county center is 8.4 miles Northeast of Antigo nearer Neva. The county is surrounded clockwise by Forest, Oconto, Menominee, Shawano, Marathon, Lincoln, and Oneida counties.
The area of the county is 870.6 square miles. It is 23 out of 72 in the state. It ranks 54 out of 72 in population in the state. It has a density of 22.4 persons per square mile making it 58 out of 72 in the state. Langlade County has 42.9% of its population in its incorporated areas. United States Highway 45 crosses north to south in the county from Oneida County to Shawano County. The county resembles a fat laser gun. Antigo is located in the southwest quarter of the county. Antigo is the county seat and the largest city. It is 41.6% of the county population. The county seat is pronounced AN-TEE-GOE.
