The masonry Art Deco structure was erected in 1941. The courthouse is on Hall Avenue, Stephenson Street, Ella Avenue, and Court Street. Hall Avenue is United States Highway 41 in the town. Max Hanisch is the architect. The building was enlarged in 1993. Veteran memorials are on the grounds. There was an 1879 version earlier. Marinette County was formed on March 3, 1879 from Oconto County as the 62nd county and Marinette has always been the county seat. The county and its county seat are named for a fur trader’s wife.
Marinette County government consists of a sheriff and 30 Supervisors. Two Circuit Court Judges and Nine Municipal Court Judges serve Marinette County. The county is on the northeast border with Michigan. Lake Michigan is its southeast border. Green Bay, Wisconsin is south and Minneapolis, Minnesota is west of the county. The county center is 31.1 miles Northwest of Marinette nearer Sweetheart City. The county is surrounded clockwise by Michigan and Door, Oconto, Forest, and Florence counties.
The area of the county is 1399.4 square miles. It is 3 out of 72 in the state. It ranks 36 out of 72 in population in the state. It has a density of 29.9 persons per square mile making it 52 out of 72 in the state. Marinette County has 45.2% of its population in its incorporated areas. United States Highway 8 enters the county from the northeast, Michigan, and exits to the west, Forest County. United States Highway 41 comes in from Michigan, southeast, and goes into Oconto County, south. United States Highway 141 crosses north to south from Michigan to Oconto County. The county resembles a caterpillar crawling southeast. The City of Marinette is located in the southeast corner of the county. Marinette is the county seat and the largest city. It is 26.6% of the county population. This county is in the Marinette Micropolitan Statistical Area.
