An outstanding stone Romanesque courthouse was built in 1901. The courthouse is on Main Street at Wisconsin Street. Fred Gaff is the architect. The building was enlarged in 1967 and renovated in 1969. A Justice Center has been recently added. It is on County Road LL at Spring Street. Spring Street is Wisconsin State Highway 32 in the town. The county was established on January 1, 1853 from Milwaukee County as the 43rd county and Port Washington has always been the county seat. The county is named for a Native American tribe. Port Washington is named for Washington County.

Lake Michigan forms its eastern border. Milwaukee, Wisconsin is south and Green Bay, Wisconsin is northwest of the county. The county center is 5 miles Southwest of Port Washington nearer Grafton. The county is surrounded clockwise by Sheboygan County and Michigan and Milwaukee, Waukesha, and Washington counties.

Interstate Highway 43 crosses through the county north to south from Sheboygan County to Milwaukee County. The county looks like the State of Vermont. Port Washington is located on the eastern border of the county. Mequon is in the southwest corner of the county. Port Washington is the county seat and Mequon is the largest city. Port Washington is 13.5% of the county population while Mequon is 27.5% of the county population. The county is pronounced OE-ZA-KEE. This county is in the Milwaukee-Waukesha-West Allis Metropolitan Statistical Area.
