The 1993 Modern, red brick and concrete courthouse is on Carmichael Road north of Vine Street.  Interstate Highway 94 is two miles south of the site.  Ayers Associate are the architects.  There were also 1900 and 1965 versions in Hudson.  Stillwater (1840), Prescott (1849), Buena Vista (1849), and Hudson (1852) have all served as the county seat.  Saint Croix County was organized on August 3, 1840 as the 21^st county.  The county is named for the river.  The county seat was named for the Hudson River in New York. 

Saint Croix County government consists of a sheriff and 19 Supervisors.  Four Circuit Court Judges and Ten Municipal Court Judges serve Saint Croix County.  The county is on the northwest border with Minnesota.  Minneapolis, Minnesota is southwest and Madison, Wisconsin is southeast of the county.  The Saint Croix River forms its western border.  The county center is 18.2 miles East-Northeast of Hudson nearer Hammond.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Polk, Barron, Dunn, and Pierce counties and Minnesota. 

The area of the county is 722.3 square miles.  It is 39 out of 72 in the state.  It ranks 17 out of 72 in population in the state.  It has a density of 129.5 persons per square mile making it 20 out of 72 in the state.  Saint Croix County has 50.5% of its population in its incorporated areas.  Interstate Highway 94 passes east to west in the county from Dunn County to Minnesota.  United States Highway 12 parallels Interstate Highway 94 from Dunn County to Minnesota.  United States Highway 63 enters from the north, Polk County, and exits to the south, Pierce County.  The county is an overall rectangle.  Hudson is located on the southwest border of the county.  Hudson is the county seat and the largest city.  It is 15.8% of the county population.  The county is pronounced SAENT KROY.  This county is in the Minneapolis-Saint Paul-Bloomington Metropolitan Statistical Area.
