The Modern concrete and masonry building was completed in 1958.  The structure is on Main Street at 4th Street.  Wisconsin State Highway 47 is Main Street in the town.  Foeller, Schober, Berners, Safford, and Jahn are the architects.  Veteran memorials are on the grounds.  There was an 1883 version earlier in Shawano, the only county seat.  Shawano County was established on January 1, 1853 from Oconto County as the 46th county.  The county and county seat are named for the Native American word meaning “southern.” 

Shawano County government consists of a sheriff and 27 Supervisors.  Two Circuit Court Judges and Two Municipal Court Judges serve Shawano and Menominee counties.  The county is in northeastern Wisconsin.  Green Bay, Wisconsin is southeast and Madison, Wisconsin is south of the county.  The county center is 7.5 miles West of Shawano nearer Thornton.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Menominee, Oconto, Brown, Outagamie, Waupaca, Portage, Marathon, and Langlade counties. 

The area of the county is 893.1 square miles.  It is 20 out of 72 in the state.  It ranks 37 out of 72 in population in the state.  It has a density of 45.8 persons per square mile making it 38 out of 72 in the state.  Shawano County has 37.9% of its population in its incorporated areas.  United States Highway 45 enters the county from the north, Langlade County, and exits to the southwest, Waupaca County.  The county resembles a water faucet.  The City of Shawano is located in the eastern quarter of the county.  Shawano is the county seat and the largest city.  It is 22.6% of the county population.  The county and county seat are pronounced SHA-WA-NOE.
