The 1878 red brick Georgian Revival courthouse is on 9th Street at Main Street.  United States Highway 189 Business is two blocks to the northwest of the location.  Harvey Booth and William McDonald combined for the designs.  Remodeling has occurred in 1910 and 1970 to the facility.  The building was enlarged in 1984.  Veteran memorials are on the grounds.  The county was created on December 1, 1869 as the 5th county.  Merrill was the first county seat followed by Evanston in 1870.  Uinta County is named for the Ute Native Americans.  The county seat was named for surveyor James Evans. 

Uinta County government consists of a sheriff and 3 Commissioners.  Two District Court Judges and Three Circuit Court Judges serve Uinta, Lincoln, and Sweetwater counties.  The county is in the southwest corner of Wyoming on the border with Utah.  The county center is 25.5 miles East of Evanston nearer Piedmont.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Lincoln and Sweetwater counties and Utah. 

The area of the county is 2082 square miles.  It is 22 out of 23 in the state.  It ranks 10 out of 23 in population in the state.  It has a density of 9.8 persons per square mile making it 4 out of 23 in the state.  Uinta County has 76.8% of its population in its incorporated areas.  Interstate Highway 80 passes east to west in the county from Sweetwater County to Utah.  United States Highway 189 enters from Lincoln County, north, and terminates.  The county is a rectangle.  Evanston is located on the western border of the county.  Evanston is the county seat and the largest city.  It is 57.5% of the county population.  The county is pronounced UE-IN-TA.  This county is in the Evanston Micropolitan Statistical Area.
