The classic Classical Revival/Beaux Arts courthouse was built in 1910. The structure is on Main Street at Summit Avenue. United States Highway 16 is Main Street at the courthouse. The brown brick and stone courthouse designer was Charles A. Randall. The building was enlarged in 1983. The facility features a dome and Lady Liberty sits on the lawn. Weston County was established on March 12, 1890 from Crook County as the 13th county with Newcastle as the only county seat. The county is named for railroad officer, John B. Weston. The county seat was named for Newcastle, England.
Weston County government consists of a sheriff and 5 Commissioners. Three District Court Judges and Four Circuit Court Judges serve Weston, Campbell, and Crook counties. Weston County is on the eastern border with South Dakota. Cheyenne, Wyoming is south and Casper, Wyoming is southwest of the county. The county center is 22 miles West of Newcastle nearer Osage. The county is surrounded clockwise by Crook County and South Dakota and Niobrara, Converse, and Campbell counties.
The area of the county is 2398 square miles. It is 18 out of 23 in the state. It ranks 21 out of 23 in population in the state. It has a density of 2.9 persons per square mile making it 17 out of 23 in the state. Weston County has 62.3% of its population in its incorporated areas. United States Highway 16 comes into the county from the east, South Dakota, and goes to the north, Crook County. United States Highway 85 enters from South Dakota, northeast, and exits into Niobrara County, south. The county is a rectangle. Newcastle is located in the eastern quarter of the county. Newcastle is the county seat and the largest city. It is 49.2% of the county population.
