A Modern concrete building was built in 1966 to serve Cullman County and remodeled in 2012 with dark red brick.  The facility is bounded by 1st and 2nd avenues Southwest and 5th and 6th streets Southwest.  There were 1879 and 1913 versions of the courthouse in the City of Cullman.  Martin J. Lide designed this current facility.  The building features columns and a working clock.  Colonel John G. Kullmann provided his name for both the county and county seat.  Cullman County was the birthplace of 1 Alabama Governor, H. Guy Hunt.  Cullman County was created on January 24, 1877 from parts of Blount, Morgan, and Winston counties as the 65th county. 

Cullman County government consists of a sheriff, revenue commissioner, and coroner (executive).  It has 5 commissioners (legislative.)  Two Circuit Judges, a District Judge, a Probate Judge, a District Attorney, and a County Clerk serve Cullman County (judicial.)  The county is in the north center of the state with Huntsville, Alabama north and Birmingham, Alabama south of the county.  Cullman is the only city to serve as county seat.  The center of the county is in Cullman 1.8 miles South-Southeast of the city center.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Morgan, Marshall, Blount, Walker, Winston, and Lawrence counties.  The City of Cullman is located in the north center of the county.  Cullman is the county seat and the largest city.  It is 20.8% of the county population.  The county and county seat are pronounced KULL-MUN. 

The county has an area of 734.8 square miles.  It ranks 28 out of 67 in size.  It ranks 17 out of 67 in population in the state.  It has a density of 123.4 persons per square mile making it 18 out of 67 in the state.  Cullman County has 27.3% of its population in its incorporated areas.  Interstate Highway 65 goes north to south through the county from Morgan County to the southwest tip of Blount County.  United States Highway 31 basically parallels Interstate Highway 65 from Morgan County into Blount County.  United States Highway 278 goes east to west from Blount County into Winston County.  The county is a triangle pointing to the northwest.  The county is in the Cullman Micropolitan Statistical Area.
