A Modern building is now the courthouse for Greene County. The previous facility dated from 1870 sits across the street. The current 1993 building is located on Morrow Street and Main Street. United States Highways 11/31 are Main Street through the town. This tan and red brick courthouse was designed by David Jones, Jr., and Associates. The courthouse features columns. Greene County was named for General Nathanael Greene. The county seat was named for Eutaw Springs, South Carolina. Greene County was formed on December 13, 1819 as the 24th county from Marengo and Tuscaloosa counties. Eric was the first county seat in 1819 followed by Eutaw in 1838.
Greene County government consists of a sheriff, revenue commissioner, and coroner (executive). It has 5 commissioners (legislative.) A Circuit Judge serves Greene, Marengo, and Sumter counties and a District Judge, a Probate Judge, a District Attorney, and a County Clerk serve Greene County (judicial.) The county is located in the western part of the state. The center of the county is 3.8 miles West of Eutaw. The county is surrounded clockwise by Pickens, Tuscaloosa, Hale, Marengo, and Sumter counties. Tuscaloosa, Alabama is just east of the county. Eutaw is in the far east of the county. Eutaw is the county seat and the largest city. It is 37.9% of the county population. The county seat is pronounced U-TAH.
The county has an area of 647.1 square miles. It ranks 38 out of 67 in size. It ranks 67 out of 67 in population in the state. It has a density of 11.5 persons per square mile making it 65 out of 67 in the state. Greene County has 49.9% of its population in its incorporated areas. Interstate Highways 20 and 59 diagonal the county from northeast to southwest, Tuscaloosa County to Sumter County. United States Highway 11 parallels the joined Interstate Highways 20/59 from Tuscaloosa County to Sumter County. United States Highway 43 is combined with United States Highway 11 coming in from Tuscaloosa County, splits at Eutaw, and exits south into Marengo County. The county is a funnel shape bending to the southeast. The Sipsey River is the north border, the Tombigbee River is the west border, and the Black Warrior River is the east border. The county is in the Tuscaloosa Metropolitan Statistical Area.
