The dark red brick courthouse was built in 1925. It is located on a square at Court Street West and East and North and Battle streets. Alabama State Highway 77 is North Street in the city. R. H. Hunt was the architect of this Neo-Classical Revival courthouse. There have been two major remodeling of the courthouse in 1934 and 1977. A County Judicial Building was added in 1974. The building features columns and marble internal walls. The grounds have veteran memorials. Talladega County was formed on December 18, 1832 from parts of St. Clair and Shelby counties as the 45th county. The county and county seat were named for a Native American village, Talatigi. The only county seat has been in Talladega. Talladega County was the birthplace of 1 Alabama Governor, William W. Brandon.
Talladega County government consists of a sheriff, revenue commissioner, and coroner (executive). It has 5 commissioners (legislative.) Three Circuit Judges, Two District Judges, a Probate Judge, a District Attorney, and a County Clerk serve Talladega County (judicial.) The county is in the eastern part of the state southeast of Birmingham, Alabama. The Coosa River forms the western county border. The center of the county is 6.8 miles Southwest of Talladega. The county is surrounded clockwise by Calhoun, Cleburne, Clay, Coosa, Shelby, and St. Clair counties. The county is shaped like a flattened capital J. The City of Talladega is in the northeast quarter of the county. It is 19.3% of the county population. The county and county seat are pronounced TAL-A-DAE-GA.
The county has an area of 736.8 square miles. It ranks 27 out of 67 in size. It ranks 19 out of 67 in population in the state. It has a density of 109.5 persons per square mile making it 19 out of 67 in the state. Talladega County has 57.3% of its population in its incorporated areas. Interstate Highway 20 crosses the northern part of the county east to west from Calhoun County to St. Clair County. United States Highway 78 parallels Interstate Highway 20 from Calhoun County to St. Clair County. United States Highway 231 enters the southwest corner of the county from Shelby County and exits south into Coosa County. United States Highway 280 is combined with United States Highway 231 from Shelby County, splits in the extreme part of the county, and continues southeast into Coosa County. Talladega is the county seat and the largest city. The county is in the Talladega-Sylacauga Micropolitan Statistical Area.
