The concrete and metal building serves as the courthouse. The courthouse is located on Nordic Drive and Gjoa in Petersburg. The borough gets its name from the city. Petersburg was named for businessman Peter Buschmann. It was formed on January 3, 2013 as the 19th and last borough as of 2022.
Petersburg Borough government consists of a police chief, financial director, a mayor, district attorney, and a clerk (executive). It has 7 assembly members (legislative.) Five Superior Judges and Three District Judges serve the First Judicial District which includes the Petersburg Borough (judicial.) The Borough is located in the Alaskan panhandle and has numerous islands and a mainland border with Canada. It touches the Pacific Ocean. The center of the borough is 2 miles West of Petersburg on Kupreanof Island. The borough is surrounded clockwise by Sitka Borough and Hoonah-Angoon Census Area and Canada, Wrangell Borough and Prince of Wales-Hyder Census Area.
The area of the borough is 2901 square miles. It is 23 of 30 in size. It ranks 21 out of 30 in population in the state. It has a density of 1.16 persons per square mile making it 11 out of 30 in the state. Petersburg Borough has 0.6% of its population in its incorporated areas. Petersburg dominates the eastern part of the borough. Petersburg is the borough seat and Kupreanof, as the only incorporated city, is the largest city. It is 0.6% of the borough population. Due to the numerous non-connected parts of this census area, there is not a good description of its shape. There are no Interstates or United States Highways in the Borough.
