The governmental courthouse of Conway County was built in 1929. An earlier courthouse was also located in Morrilton. The architect was Frank W. Gibb for this Classical Revival style courthouse. Moose Street at Church Street is the building’s location. United States Highway 64 is two blocks north of the building. Congressman Henry W. Conway was the namesake for the county. He is also the namesake for the county seat of Faulkner County. Local landowners E. J. and George H. Morril were honored by providing their name to the county seat. Conway County was created on October 20, 1825 from Pulaski County as the 10th county. Cadron (1825), Harrisburg (1829), Lewisburg (1831 & 1873), Springfield (1850), and Morrilton (1883) have all served as the county seat.
Conway County government consists of a sheriff, assessor, treasurer, and coroner (executive). It has 11 Quorum Court members (legislative.) Three Circuit Court Judges serve Conway, Logan, Scott, and Yell counties and Two District Court Judges, an Attorney, and a County Clerk serve Conway County (judicial.) The Arkansas River is the majority of the southern border of this county located northwest of Little Rock, Arkansas. The center of the county is 11.8 miles North-Northeast of Morrilton nearer Solgohachia. The county is surrounded clockwise by Van Buren, Faulkner, Perry, Yell, and Pope counties. The county is a tall rectangle with the wavy south border and a foot crossing the river to the southwest. Morrilton is extreme south of the county on the river. Morrilton is the county seat and the largest city. It is 33.7% of the county population.
The area of the county is 566.7 square miles. It is 71 of 75 in size. It ranks 32 out of 75 in population in the state. It has a density of 36.5 persons per square mile making it 26 out of 75 in the state. Conway County has 42.2% of its population in its incorporated areas. Interstate Highway 40 enters from Faulkner County to the east and exits into Pope County to the west. United States Highway 64 parallels Interstate Highway 40 through the county from Faulkner County to Pope County.
