The Federalist style stucco building was built in 1928.  The courthouse is located on San Juan Street between 3rd and 4th streets.  United States Highway 160 is San Juan Street.  Eugene G. Groves is the architect.  Pagosa Springs is the only county seat.  Archuleta County was created on April 14, 1885 from Conejos County as the 54th county.  The county got its name from Senator Antonio D. Archuleta.  The county seat is named for the springs which is Native American for “boiling waters.”  The center of the county is 10.1 miles South of Pagosa Springs.  Pagosa Springs if the county seat and the largest and only incorporated city.  It is 12.0% of the county population. 

Archuleta County government consists of a sheriff, assessor, manager, coroner, and treasurer (executive).  It has 3 Commissioners (legislative.)  Four District Court Judges serve Archuleta, La Plata, and San Juan counties and a Trial Court Judge, clerk, and county attorney serve Archuleta County (judicial.)  Archuleta County is in southwest Colorado on the border with New Mexico.  The San Juan River flows through the county.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Mineral, Rio Grande, and Conejos counties and New Mexico and La Plata and Hinsdale counties.  Pagosa Springs is located in the northern third of the county.  

The area of the county is 1354.5 square miles.  The county is 33 out of 64 in the state.  It ranks 34 out of 64 in population in the state.  It has a density of 9.9 persons per square mile making it 34 out of 64 in the state.  Archuleta County has 12.0% of its population in its incorporated areas.  United States Highway 84 originates in the county and exits south into New Mexico.  United States Highway 160 enters from Mineral County, northeast, and exits into La Plata County, west.  The county is a rectangle with a point diagonally out of the southeast part.
