A tan brick Art Deco courthouse was built in 1932, added to in 1990, and remodeled in 1997. The building is located on Broadway at 5th Street. United States Highway 6 is four blocks east of the site. An Administration Center was added in 1990 and a separate Justice Center was built in 1991. Francis Pillsbury is the architect for the courthouse. An augmenting courthouse is located in El Jebel. Eagle County was formed on February 11, 1883 from Summit County as the 36th county. Both the county and county seat get their names from the Eagle River. Red Cliff was the original county seat being replaced by the Town of Eagle in 1921. The center of the county is 9.6 miles Southeast of Eagle.
Eagle County government consists of a sheriff, assessor, manager, coroner, and treasurer (executive). It has 3 Commissioners (legislative.) Six District Court Judges serve Eagle, Clear Creek, Lake, and Summit counties and a Trial Court Judge, clerk, and county attorney serve Eagle County (judicial.) The county is located in the central part of the state. The Colorado River flows through the northwest corner of the county. The county is surrounded clockwise by Grand, Summit, Lake, Pitkin, Garfield, and Routt counties.
The area of the county is 1700.8 square miles. The county is 26 out of 64 in the state. It ranks 14 out of 64 in population in the state. It has a density of 32.8 persons per square mile making it 16 out of 64 in the state. Eagle County has 55.1% of its population in its incorporated areas. Interstate Highway 70 crosses east to west in the county, from Summit County to Garfield County. United States Highway 6 parallels Interstate Highway 70 from Summit County to Garfield County. United States Highway 24 originates at Interstate Highway 70 and travels south into Lake County. The county shape is overall rectangular but the eastern border jaggedly follows mountain ridges. The Town of Eagle is located in the western third of the county. Eagle is the county seat and Gypsum is the largest city. Eagle is 12.5% of the county population and Gypsum is 14.4%. The county is in the Edwards Micropolitan Statistical Area.
