A Classical Revival style stone 1913 structure sits on a square on Le Fever, North, Logan, and South streets. Main Street is Colorado State Highway 125 and is one block east of the courthouse. William Norman Bowman is the architect. It features columns. The county was established on May 5, 1909 from Larimer County as the 60th county with Walden as the only county seat. Jackson County was named for President Andrew Jackson. The local postmaster, Marcus Aurelius Walden, is the namesake for the county seat. The center of the county is 4.9 miles South-Southeast of Walden.
Jackson County government consists of a sheriff, assessor, manager, coroner, and treasurer (executive). It has 3 Commissioners (legislative.) Eight District Court Judges serve Jackson and Larimer counties and a Trial Court Judge, clerk, and county attorney serve Jackson County (judicial.) The county is located in north central Colorado on the border with Wyoming. The Continental Divide forms the western and southern borders. The North Platte River flows through the county. The county is surrounded clockwise by Wyoming and Larimer, Grand, and Routt counties. United States Highway 40 touches the southwest corner of the county for a few miles coming from and going back into Grand County.
The area of the county is 1619.8 square miles. The county is 29 out of 64 in the state. It ranks 61 out of 64 in population in the state. It has a density of 0.9 persons per square mile making it 62 out of 64 in the state. Jackson County has 43.9% of its population in its incorporated areas. The county’s shape is a bag of marbles. Walden is located slightly north of the center of the county. Walden is the county seat and the largest city and only incorporated city in the county. It is 43.9% of the county population. The county seat is pronounced WALL-DUN.
