A Modernistic style courthouse sits on Victory Avenue between Barclay and School streets. The facility was originally built in 1918, remodeled in 1932, and completely reconstructed in 1962 to its current appearance. United States Highway 40 passes in front of the courthouse. William Norman Bowman provided the original designs for what is now a red brick courthouse. Craig has been the only county seat. The county was created on February 27, 1911 from Routt County as the 61st county. Railroad tycoon David H. Moffat was the county’s namesake. Reverend William B. Craig, one of the town founders, inspired the county seat’s name. The center of the county is 53.2 miles West of Craig nearer Sunbeam.
Moffat County government consists of a sheriff, assessor, manager, coroner, and treasurer (executive). It has 3 Commissioners (legislative.) Three District Court Judges serve Moffat, Grand, and Routt counties and a Trial Court Judge, clerk, and county attorney serve Moffat County (judicial.) The county is located in the northwest corner of the state on the borders with Wyoming and Utah. The county is surrounded clockwise by Wyoming and Routt and Rio Blanco counties and Utah.
The area of the county is 4755.9 square miles. The county is 2 out of 64 in the state. It ranks 35 out of 64 in population in the state. It has a density of 2.8 persons per square mile making it 52 out of 64 in the state. Moffat County has 70.0% of its population in its incorporated areas. United States Highway 40 crosses the width of the county, east to west, Routt County to Utah. The county shape is overall rectangular. Craig is located in the extreme eastern part of the county. Craig is the county seat and the largest city. It is 68.2% of the county population. The county is pronounced MAH-FIT.
