The Modern style tan brick building is the new courthouse in Calhoun County. It replaced a classic 1904 courthouse. The 1973 building is located on Central Avenue between Clerk and River streets. Central Avenue is Florida State Highway 20. Charles A. Gaskin is the building designer. The building is under renovation in 2019. The courthouse features columns and veteran memorials are in front. St. Joseph (1838), Iola (1839), Abe Spring Bluff (1848), and Blountstown (1880) has all been the county seat. The county for named for United States Vice President John C. Calhoun. The county seat was named for Native American chief John Blount. Calhoun County was the birthplace of 1 Florida Governor, Fuller Warren. Calhoun County was created on January 26, 1838 from parts of Franklin, Jackson, and Washington counties as the 20th county.
Calhoun County government consists of a manager, sheriff, and appraiser (executive). It has 5 Commissioners (legislative.) Nine Circuit Court Judges serve Calhoun, Bay, Gulf, Holmes, Jackson, and Washington counties and a County Court Judge, clerk, and county attorney serve Calhoun County (judicial.) The county is located in the northwest Florida in the panhandle. Tallahassee, Florida is east of the county. The center of the county is 10.4 miles West of Blountstown nearer Clarksville. The county is surrounded clockwise by Jackson, Gadsden, Liberty, Gulf, and Bay counties.
The area of the county is 567 square miles. It is 51 out of 67 counties in the state. It ranks 63 out of 67 in population in the state. It has a density of 24.1 persons per square mile making it 61 out of 67 in the state. Broward County has 20.2% of its population in its incorporated areas. There are no Interstates or United States Highways in the county. The county is shaped like the State of Louisiana turned 90 degrees counter-clockwise. Blountstown is located in the extreme eastern part of the county on the Apalachicola River. Blountstown is the county seat and the largest city. It is 16.6% of the county population. This river makes up the eastern border of the county.
