The Modern building is made of concrete, white brick and wood. It is located on Florida State Highway 251 between King and Barber avenues. United States Highway 98 is 4 blocks south of the courthouse. The building was built in 1965 and remodeled in 1998. Harry Burns and Associates are the designers. Veteran memorials are on the grounds. There was a 1924 courthouse in Cross City. Old Town (1921) and Cross City (1922) have both been the county seat. The county’s name is a nickname for the southern United States. The county seat was named for the crossing of two highways. Dixie County was formed on April 25, 1921 from Lafayette County as the 59th county.

Seven Circuit Court Judges serve Dixie, Columbia, Hamilton, Lafayette, Madison, Suwannee, and Taylor counties and a County Court Judge, clerk, and county attorney serve Dixie County (judicial.) The county is situated in northern Florida in the bend area on the Gulf of Mexico. Tallahassee, Florida is northwest of the county. The center of the county is 1.9 miles South-Southeast of Cross City. The county is surrounded clockwise by Lafayette, Gilchrist, and Levy counties and the Gulf of Mexico and Taylor County.
The area of the county is 704 square miles. It is 33 out of 67 counties in the state. It ranks 58 out of 67 in population in the state. It has a density of 23.8 persons per square mile making it 62 out of 67 in the state. Dixie County has 11.1% of its population in its incorporated areas. United States Highways 19/27A are joined across the county from northwest to southeast, Taylor County to Levy County. The county is shaped like a Native American arrowhead. Cross City is near the center of the county. Cross City is the county seat and the largest city. It is 10.1% of the county population. The Suwannee River forms the eastern border of the county.
