The Modern style red brick courthouse at Newnan and Tanner streets was built in 2012.  Georgia State Highway 16 is Newnan Street.  It replaced the 1928 courthouse which had replaced the 1892 courthouse, both in Carrollton.  The designs came from a team of architects including Alex Roush and Gardner, Spencer, Smith, Tench & Jarbeau.  The courthouse features veteran memorials and a painted wolf on the grounds.  The county was created on June 9, 1826 from the Cherokee Lands as the 66^th county.  McIntosh Reserve was the first county seat until 1829 when Carrollton took over.  The county and county seat are named for Charles Carroll, signer of the Declaration of Independence.  The county center is in Carrollton 1.9 miles North of the city center. 

Carroll County government consists of a manager, a sheriff, an administrator, a coroner, a clerk, and a tax commissioner (executive).  It has 7 Commissioners (legislative.)  Eighteen Superior Court Judges serve Carroll, Butts, Clayton, Coweta, Fayette, Heard, Henry, Lamar, Meriwether, Monroe, Pike, Spalding, Troup, and Upson counties and a State Judge and Six County Judges, court clerk, and county attorney serve Carroll County (judicial.) The county is in northwest Georgia on the border with Alabama.  The Chattahoochee River forms its southeast border.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Paulding, Douglas, Fulton, Coweta, and Heard counties and Alabama and Haralson County. 

The area of the county is 499 square miles.  It is 27 of 159 in size in the state.  It ranks 21 out of 159 in population in the state.  It has a density of 238.8 persons per square mile making it 29 out of 159 in the state.  Carroll County has 38.8% of its population in its incorporated areas.  Interstate Highway 20 crosses the county east to west from Douglas County to Haralson County.  United States Highway 27 goes north to south from Haralson County to Heard County.  United States Highway 27 Alternate begins in the county and heads southeast into Coweta County.  United States Highway 78 parallels Interstate Highway 20 from Douglas County to Haralson County.  The county shape is a capital letter L lying on its back.  Carrollton is located slightly south of center in the county.  Carrollton is the county seat and the largest city.  It is 22.4% of the county population.  This county is in the Atlanta-Sandy Springs-Marietta Metropolitan Statistical Area.
