The Modern style light yellow brick courthouse was built in 1971 on Dallas Road (Georgia State Highway 120) between Courthouse Drive and Park Heights Street.  Georgia State Highway 120 is in front of the site.  I. E. Saporta is the building designer.  The grounds have a gazebo, veteran memorials, an eagle, and a military gun.  The county was created on January 26, 1856 from Cherokee County as the 112th county.  There was a very nice 1892 courthouse in Buchanan, the only county seat.  The county was named for Congressman Hugh Anderson Haralson.  The county seat’s namesake is President James Buchanan.  The county center is 4.5 miles South of Buchanan. 

Haralson County government consists of a sheriff, an administrator, a coroner, a clerk, and a tax commissioner (executive).  It has 5 Commissioners (legislative.)  Thirty-two Superior Court Judges serve Haralson, Bartow, Catoosa, Chattooga, Cobb, Dade, Douglas, Floyd, Gordon, Murray, Paulding, Polk, Walker, and Whitfield counties and Six County Judges, court clerk, and county attorney serve Haralson County (judicial.) The county is in northwest Georgia on the border with Alabama.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Polk, Paulding, and Carroll counties and Alabama.  The Tallapoosa River flows through the county. 

The area of the county is 282 square miles.  It is 108 out of 159 counties in the state.  It ranks 61 out of 159 in population in the state.  It has a density of 106.1 persons per square mile making it 55 out of 159 in the state.  Haralson County has 39.7% of its population in its incorporated areas.  Interstate Highway 20 crosses the extreme south of the county from Carroll County, east, to Alabama, west.  United States Highway 27 crosses the county north to south from Polk County to Carroll County.  United States Highway 78 parallels Interstate Highway 20 from Carroll County to Alabama.  The county is diamond shaped slanting 45 degrees.  Buchanan is slightly northeast of center in the county.  Bremen is located in the southern quarter of the county and extends into Carroll County.  Buchanan is the county seat and Bremen is the largest city.  Buchanan is 3.1% of the county population while Bremen is 24.0% of the county population.  This county is in the Atlanta-Sandy Springs-Marietta Metropolitan Statistical Area.
