The Romanesque Revival style 1897 courthouse built of red brick supports this county.  It is on Macon Street at John Frank Ward Street.  United States Highway 23 passes in front of the courthouse.  J. W. Golucke & Stewart are the architects.  It was enlarged in 2003 and renovated in 2008.  A Justice Center was built in 2006.  The courthouse features a tower and the park across the street has the veteran memorials.  There was an 1831 courthouse also in McDonough, the only county seat.  The county center is 3.1 miles Northeast of McDonough. 

Henry County government consists of a sheriff, an administrator, a coroner, a clerk, and a tax commissioner (executive).  It has 6 Commissioners (legislative.)  Eighteen Superior Court Judges serve Henry, Butts, Carroll, Clayton, Coweta, Fayette, Heard, Lamar, Meriwether, Monroe, Pike, Spalding, Troup, and Upson counties and Four State Judges and Ten County Judges, court clerk, and county attorney serve Henry County (judicial.) The county is located in the southeast part of the Atlanta Metropolitan Area.  Atlanta, Georgia is northwest of the county.  The county is surrounded clockwise by De Kalb, Rockdale, Newton, Butts, Spalding, and Clayton counties.  The county was organized on May 15, 1821 from the Creek Lands as the 50^th county.  It later provided land for De Kalb, Fulton, Fayette, Newton, Clayton, Spalding, Rockdale, and Butts counties.  American Statesman Patrick Henry inspired the name for the county.  War of 1812 Naval hero Captain James McDonough provided his name for the county seat.  Henry County was the birthplace of 1 Georgia Governor, James S. Boynton. 

The area of the county is 323 square miles.  It is 92 out of 159 counties in the state.  It ranks 9 out of 159 in population in the state.  It has a density of 745.3 persons per square mile making it 9 out of 159 in the state.  Henry County has 31.3% of its population in its incorporated areas.  Interstate Highway 75 travels northwest to southeast in the county from Clayton County to Spalding County.  United States Highways 19/41 cross the western part of the county from Fayette County, north, to Spalding County, south.  United States Highway 23 parallels Interstate Highway 75 from Clayton County to Butts County.  The county is shaped like a tugboat sailing east.  McDonough is located slightly south of center in the county.  Stockbridge is in the northwest part of the county.  McDonough is the county seat and the largest city.  McDonough is 12.1% of the county population.  The county seat is pronounced MUK-DON-OE.  This county is in the Atlanta-Sandy Springs-Marietta Metropolitan Statistical Area.
