The courthouse, built in 2003, is a Modern style red and tan brick structure.  It is on Perry Parkway at Sugarloaf Parkway.  HDR Architecture, JMA Architecture, and Hayes, Michael and Associates all participated in the designs.  There were 1857 and 1949 courthouses earlier also in Perry, the only county seat.  The 1949 courthouse is now the County Government Building.  There is an augmenting courthouse, Juvenile court and an administrative center in Warner Robins.  The county was created on May 15, 1821 from Creek lands as the 51st county.  Its namesake is Governor John Houstoun (different spelling.)  The county seat is named for Naval Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry.  Houston County was the birthplace of 1 Georgia Governor, George E. Perdue III.  The county center is 5.2 miles Northeast of Perry nearer Kathleen. 

Houston County government consists of a manager, a sheriff, an administrator, a coroner, a clerk, and a tax commissioner (executive).  It has 5 Commissioners (legislative.)  Sixteen Superior Court Judges serve Houston, Bibb, Chattahoochee, Crawford, Harris, Lee, Macon, Marion, Muscogee, Peach, Schley, Stewart, Sumter, Talbot, Taylor, and Webster counties and a State Judge and Seven County Judges, court clerk, and county attorney serve Houston County (judicial.) The county is in central Georgia directly south of Macon, Georgia.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Bibb, Twiggs, Bleckley, Pulaski, Dooly, Macon, and Peach counties.  The Ocmulgee River forms its eastern border. 

The area of the county is 377 square miles.  It is 66 out of 159 counties in the state.  It ranks 14 out of 159 in population in the state.  It has a density of 434.1 persons per square mile making it 21 out of 159 in the state.  Houston County has 66.3% of its population in its incorporated areas.  Interstate Highway 75 crosses the county north to south from Peach County to Dooly County.  United States Highway 41 parallels Interstate Highway 75 from Peach County to Dooly County.  United States Highway 129 enters from the north, Bibb County, and exits to the south, Pulaski County.  United States Highway 341 enters from Peach County, northwest, and exits into Pulaski County, southeast.  The county is shaped like a bag of popcorn spilling out toward the northeast.  Perry is located in the western quarter of the county and extends into Peach County.  Warner Robins is located in the northern quarter of the county and extends into Peach County.  Perry is the county seat and Warner Robins is the largest city.  Perry is 12.6% of the county population while Warner Robins is 49.1% of the county population.  The county is pronounced HOW-STON.  This county is in the Warner Robins Metropolitan Statistical Area.
