The 1928 Modern concrete building sits among a number of government structures.  It is on Punchbowl and King streets.  Interstate Highway H1 is four blocks northeast of the site.  The architect is Anbe, Aruga, and Ishizu Architects.  There was an 1872 courthouse in Honolulu.  The county was created on April 30, 1907 as Oahu County and the 5th and final county.  The county and county seat names come from Hawaiian for “sheltered bay.”  Honolulu County was the birthplace of 3 Hawaii Governors, George R. Ariyoshi, Benjamin J. Cayetano, and David Y. Ige.  The Hawaii state capitol is located in this county. 

Honolulu County government consists of a police chief, a mayor, a clerk, and an auditor (executive).  It has 9 Council Members (legislative.)  Twenty-one Circuit Court Judges, Forty-six Court Judges, and Seventeen Family Court Judges and a county attorney serve Honolulu County (judicial.) The county is located in central Hawaii north of the state’s geographical center.  The City and County operate as a single governing function.  The county center is 24.9 miles North-Northwest of Honolulu nearer Wahiawa.  The county is surrounded clockwise by the Pacific Ocean, and Maui and Kauai counties. 

The area of the county is 597 square miles.  It is 4 out of 5 in the state.  It ranks 1 out of 5 in population in the state.  It has a density of 1702.7 persons per square mile making it 1 out of 5 in the state.  Honolulu County has 34.5% of its population in its incorporated areas.  Honolulu County has the only federal highways in the state.  Interstate Highway H1 follows the southern coastline east to west.  Interstate Highway H2 travels north to south through the middle of the county.  Interstate Highway H3 goes northeast to southwest through the southeast corner of the county.  Barack H. Obama, the 44th President, was born in this county.  The county is shaped like a lazy capital letter L.  The city occupies the majority of the southeast corner of the island.  Honolulu is the county seat and the largest and only city.  It is 34.5% of the county population.  The county and county seat are pronounced HON-OE-LUE-LUE.  This county is in the Honolulu Metropolitan Statistical Area.
