A concrete building serves as the 1988 courthouse for this county.  Wailuku had a 1913 earlier courthouse and Lahaina had an 1859 courthouse.  The current courthouse is on Main Street between Church and High streets.  Main Street is Hawaii State Highway 32.  The architect is unknown.  An Administrative Building supports the courthouse.  The county was established on August 1, 1905 as the 3rd county.  The county is named for the island.  The county seat’s name is Hawaiian for “water of destruction.” 

Maui County government consists of a police chief, a mayor, a clerk, and an auditor (executive).  It has 9 Council Members (legislative.)  Four Circuit Court Judges, Twelve Court Judges, and Ten Family Court Judges and a county attorney serve Hawaii County (judicial.) The county is in east central Hawaii.  The geographical center of Hawaii is off the southwest shore of Molokai in the Pacific Ocean part of the county.  The county center is 8 miles West-Northwest of Wailuku nearer Kaanapali.  The county is surrounded clockwise by the Pacific Ocean and Hawaii and Honolulu counties. 

The area of the county is 1120 square miles.  It is 2 out of 5 in the state.  It ranks 3 out of 5 in population in the state.  It has a density of 117.8 persons per square mile making it 2 out of 5 in the state.  Maui County has 0.0% of its population in its incorporated areas as there are no incorporated cities.  There are no federal highways in the county.  The main island is shaped like a fish.  Wailuku is located on the northwest coast of the island yet it is east of center in the county.  The largest city is also in the northwest of the island just to the east of the county seat.  Wailuku is the county seat and Kahului is the largest populated area although it is not incorporated.  Wailuku is 10.7% of the county population while Kahului is 17.1% of the county population.  The county is pronounced MOU-EE.  The county seat is pronounced WA-EE-LUE-KUE.  This county is in the Kahului-Wailuku Micropolitan Statistical Area.
