A red/brown brick building was constructed in 1986 to replace a classic 1894 courthouse. The new courthouse is at Washington and Quincy streets. United States Highway 51 is two blocks west of the site. This Modern style structure was designed by FGM, Inc. The county was created on March 1, 1839 from Macon and McLean counties as the 86th county with Marion was the county seat initially until Clinton assumed the county seat. The county and county seat are named for New York Governor DeWitt Clinton. Clinton County is also named for him.
DeWitt County government consists of a sheriff, an attorney, a coroner, a clerk, a treasurer, and an assessor (executive). It has 12 Board Members (legislative.) Eleven Circuit Court Judges serve DeWitt, Champaign, Douglas, Macon, Moultrie, and Piatt counties and a court clerk serves DeWitt County (judicial.) The county is in central Illinois northwest of Springfield, Illinois and southeast of Peoria, Illinois. The county center is 4.1 miles Northeast of Clinton. The county is surrounded clockwise by McLean, Piatt, Macon, and Logan counties.
The area of the county is 397 square miles. It is 73 out of 102 in the state. It ranks 70 out of 102 in population in the state. It has a density of 39.1 persons per square mile making it 61 out of 102 in the state. DeWitt County has 68.0% of its population in its incorporated areas. Interstate Highway 74 cuts the northeast corner of the county from McLean County, north, to Piatt County, east. United States Highway 51 crosses north to south through the county from McLean to Macon counties. United States Highway 150 parallels Interstate Highway 74 from McLean County to Piatt County. The county is shaped like a fat key pointing east. Clinton is in the western half of the county. Clinton is the county seat and the largest city. It is 45.1% of the county population.
