The domed masonry and stone facility was built in 1903 to replace the 1857 courthouse.  It is located on a square at Broadway, McLean, Pulaski, and Kickapoo streets.  Interstate Highway 55 Business is two blocks northwest of the courthouse.  John M. Deal was the courthouse architect in a Classical Revival style.  There was also an 1847 courthouse in Mount Pulaski.  Logan County was established on February 15, 1839 from Sangamon County as the 82nd county with Postville as the first county seat.  Mount Pulaski was county seat in 1847 and Lincoln in 1853.  The county is named for State Representative John Logan.  The county seat is obviously named for President Abraham Lincoln but it was also named by him. 

Logan County government consists of a sheriff and 12 Commissioners.  Eighteen Circuit Court Judges serve Logan, Ford, Livingston, McLean, and Woodford counties.  The county is in central Illinois directly northeast of Springfield, Illinois and southwest of Peoria, Illinois.  The geographical center of Illinois is 28 miles northeast of Springfield in the county.  The county center is 8.4 miles South-Southwest of Lincoln nearer Broadwell.  The county is surrounded clockwise by McLean, De Witt, Macon, Sangamon, Menard, Mason, and Tazewell counties. 

The area of the county is 618 square miles.  It is 32 out of 102 in the state.  It ranks 49 out of 102 in population in the state.  It has a density of 45.3 persons per square mile making it 52 out of 102 in the state.  Logan County has 67.7% of its population in its incorporated areas.  Interstate Highway 55 crosses the county northeast to southwest from McLean County to Sangamon County.  Interstate Highway 155 enters from the north, Tazewell County, and terminates.  United States Highway 136 crosses the top part of the county east to west from McLean to Mason counties.  The county is a zigzag lying on its back.  Lincoln is near the center of the county.  Lincoln is the county seat and the largest city.  It is 47.5% of the county population.  This county is in the Lincoln Micropolitan Statistical Area.
