The Neo-Classical masonry and concrete building was constructed in 1913.  It replaced an 1877 facility.  It is on Vermilion at Main streets.  United States Highway 136 is Main Street in this part of the town.  C. M. Lewis and L. F. W. Stueber provided the designs.  The building feature faux columns.  Vermilion County was created on January 1, 1826 from parts of Clark and Edgar counties as the 45th county.  After a local house serving as courthouse, Danville became the county seat in 1827.  A former 1911 Post Office serves as an Administration Building.  The county is named for the river which is named for the red colored bluffs on its banks.  Danville is named for founder Dan Beckworth.  

Vermilion County government consists of a sheriff, an attorney, a coroner, a clerk, a treasurer, and an assessor (executive).  It has 27 Board Members (legislative.)  Seventeen Circuit Court Judges serve Vermilion, Clark, Coles, Cumberland, and Edgar counties and a court clerk serves Vermilion County (judicial.) The county is in eastern Illinois on the border with Indiana.  Champaign, Illinois is west and Terre Haute, Indiana is southeast of the county.  The county center is 5.3 miles Northwest of Danville, Illinois.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Iroquois County and Indiana and Edgar, Douglas, Champaign, and Ford counties. 

The area of the county is 898 square miles.  It is 7 out of 102 in the state.  It ranks 21 out of 102 in population in the state.  It has a density of 82.6 persons per square mile making it 28 out of 102 in the state.  Vermilion County has 71.8% of its population in its incorporated areas.  Interstate Highway 74 crosses the county east to west from Indiana to Champaign County.  United States Highway 136 enters the county from Indiana, east, and exits the county into Champaign County, northwest.  United States Highway 150 comes in from the south, Edgar County, and turns west into Champaign County.  The county is overall a tall rectangle.  Danville is in the eastern quarter of the county.  Danville is the county seat and the largest city.  It is 39.4% of the county population.  The county is pronounced VER-MIL-YUN.  This county is in the Danville Metropolitan Statistical Area.
