A Classical Revival masonry building, located on Courthouse Square, was built in 1911.  Main, Lebanon, Washington, and Meridian streets form the square.  Lebanon Street is Indiana State Highway 39 in the town.  Joseph T. Hutton provided the building designs.  A working clock is on the dome and veteran memorials are on the grounds.  An earlier courthouse was built in 1857.  Jamestown was the original county seat until 1833.  The county was formed on January 29, 1830 as the 60th county and named for Kentucky frontiersman Daniel Boone.  The county was taken from Native American Territory.  A grove of local trees inspired founders to name the county seat after the Biblical site of Lebanon. 

Boone County government consists of a sheriff, an auditor, a clerk, a coroner, a treasurer, and an assessor (executive).  It has 7 Council Members (legislative.)  A Circuit Court Judge, Two Superior Court Judges, and a prosecutor serve Boone County (judicial.) The county is in central Indiana immediately northwest of Indianapolis, Indiana.  The county center is in Lebanon 1.6 miles Southeast of the city center.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Clinton, Hamilton, Marion, Hendricks, and Montgomery counties.  The county is a rectangle with Lebanon near the center of the county.  Lebanon is the county seat and Zionsville is the largest city.  Lebanon is 23.6% of the county population and Zionsville is 43.2% of the county population.  The county seat is pronounced LEB-A-NON. 

The area of the county is 423 square miles.  It is 28 out of 92 in the state.  It ranks 24 out of 92 in population in the state.  It has a density of 167.4 persons per square mile making it 23 out of 92 in the state.  Boone County has 85.4% of its population in its incorporated areas.  Interstate Highway 65 crosses the county northwest to southeast from Clinton County to Marion County.  Interstate Highway 74 crosses the southwest corner from Montgomery County, west, to Hendricks County, south.  United States Highway 52 parallels Interstate Highway 65 from Clinton County and then joins to exit into Marion County.  United States Highway 136 parallels Interstate Highway 74 from Montgomery to Hendricks counties.  United States Highway 421 goes north to southeast from Clinton County to Hamilton County.  This county is in the Indianapolis-Carmel Metropolitan Statistical Area.
