The Modern style red brick courthouse was built in 2003 on Indiana State Highway 46.  Schenkel Shultz is the architect.  There have been courthouses from 1895 and 1958 in English and 1822 in Fredonia.  Another account shows Mount Sterling and Leavenworth as previous county seats also.  The county was established on January 29, 1818 from parts of Orange, Harrison, and Perry counties as the 27th county.  It is named for Revolutionary War hero Colonel William Crawford.  He also inspired the name of the county seat of Montgomery County.  The county seat is named for Indiana politician William Hayden English. 

Crawford County government consists of a sheriff, 3 Commissioners, and 7 Council Members.  A Circuit Court Judge serves Crawford County.  The county is in southern Indiana on the Ohio River border with Kentucky.  The county center is 2.9 miles South of English.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Orange, Washington, and Harrison counties and Kentucky and Perry and Dubois counties. 

The area of the county is 306 square miles.  It is 79 out of 92 in the state.  It ranks 86 out of 92 in population in the state.  It has a density of 34.4 persons per square mile making it 87 out of 92 in the state.  Crawford County has 21.4% of its population in its incorporated areas.  Interstate Highway 64 crosses the county east to west from Harrison County to Perry County.  The county is shaped like a comma.  English is located in the northern third of the county.  Marengo is in the northeast part of the county.  English is the county seat and Marengo is the largest city.  English is 6.5% of the county population while Marengo is 7.9% of the county population.
